THE DIP
Are you planning to 'quit' something because even after putting enough hard work, the results are not satisfying ? Then please rethink and decide wisely, after reading the summary of Book ' The Dip' (by Seth Godin). It teaches us about the right time to 'quit'.
The book talks about 3 curves
1) The Dip
• When we start something, it's fun because in intial phase, the new learnings and experiences keeps us going. But after that phase, 'Dip' happens.
• Here our increased efforts doesn't improve the results. At this point we feel like quitting.
• But quitting at this time isn't a good idea because just by pushing ourselves a little bit harder, we can cross 'the Dip' and become best in whatever we are doing and thus can achieve our ultimate goal. Although only few can gather courage to go beyond the dip.
• If you can't make it through 'the dip' of a particular field, its better not to start it and infact save your resources for something you are passionate about so that you can survive it's dip.
2) The 'CUL - DE - SAC'
• It is a French word, which means 'dead end'
•This happens when you work, you work and you work! But still you get no results.
• When you find yourself in such scenario, then there is a need to get off it fast because the opportunity cost of investing your life in something that's not going to get better is just too high.
•Thus it's better to quit when you find yourself in situations like 'CUL-DE-SAC'.
3) The Cliff
• Although most people doesn't face this curve (it's not as common as 'the dip' & 'CUL-DE-SAC') but it's scary for those who face it
• This happens when, while doing something for longer time it makes you feel even better. Thus the pain of quitting gets bigger and bigger over time, making it impossible to quit. For example smoking.
•Cliff is a situation where you can't quit until you fall off and whole thing falls apart.
• Thus you need to quit right now if you find yourself facing ' The Cliff'.
Why is quitting at right time difficult ?
•Quitting requires you to acknowledge that you aren't going to be the best in this particular field, which is hard to accept. Thus we continue doing whatever we are doing right now without giving it any further thoughts.
•To avoid humiliation of failure and keep our pride intact.
•Because it's easier to stick with something we are used to.
• Quitting feels like go down moment.
Conclusion
• Never quit when you face the Dip but be brave enough to quit when you encounter 'CUL-DE-SAC' or 'The Cliff'. Remember that, quitting isn't same as failing instead strategic quitting helps us to avoid failing.
Favourite quote and example.
•A woodpecker can tap twenty times on one thousand trees and get nowhere but stay busy or he can tap twenty thousand times on one tree and get dinner.
• Pride isn't that important - Michael Crichton graduated from Harvard Medical School and had done postdoctoral fellowship. He had already made it through the Dip but he didn't relish the future if medical career regardless of how succesful he might become at it. And he is now a best selling author. Thus you don't have to spent rest of your life doing something you don't enjoy, just in order to preserve your pride.
