HOMEMADE SHAMPOO

 


Worried about the chemicals you are using while shampooing your hair ? Then you can read this summary of Book 'Homemade Shampoo' (Jane Aniston). I have listed down the recipes according to different hair types and only the ones which use easily available ingredients. Let's get started !

1) Quickest and easiest recipe 

•Properly mix 3 cups of water with 1cup of baking soda. 

• Massage the mixture into your hair.

• For extra shine, use apple cider vinegar to rinse before final rinse with cool water (or we can simply rinse with cool water).

Yeah! That's it. Quite easy, right ? If you are ready for more challenge, read the following recipes. 

2 ) Shampoo for all hair types 

a) Lemony egg shampoo 

•egg - natural moisturizer 

•Ingredients -2tsp baking soda, 2eggs, 2tsp lemon juice, 2tsp olive oil. 

•Beat egg in bowl, until well mixed. Add olive oil, lemon juice, baking soda and mix well. 

•Massage it from scalp to tip and rinse with cool water 

b) Fenugreek(methi) Shampoo 

• Fenugreek (easily available on Amazon) - encourage hair growth. It has protein , lecithin, amino acid. Also helps to keep hair strong. 

•Ingredients - a bowl of water, 2 tsp fenugreek seeds.

• Recipe - soak the unprocessed seeds overnight in 1-2 cups of water. Strain water and paste the seeds finely.

•Apply mixture on scalp using fingers and let it stay for 40 mins. Then wash with cool water.

c)Neem leaf shampoo 

•Neem has antifungal properties, hence this shampoo is used for treating dandruff.

•Ingredients - 2 handful of neem leaves, 4-5 cups hot water 

•Recipe - Put neem leaves in hot water overnight. Use strainer to pour liquid in container. 

•Massage the mixture on your scalp and leave for atleast 1hour. To prevent liquid evaporation, use hot towel on head. Then rinse with cool water 

3) Shampoo for dry hair 

a) Cucumber and lemon Shampoo 

•Ingredients - 1 cucumber and 1 lemon(with or without peeling, depending on your choice)

•Recipe - Paste both the ingredients. 

•Apply mixture on your hair and scalp. Then rinse with cool water.  

b) Coconut milk shampoo 

•Ingredients - 3tsp organic coconut milk, 1/4th cup liquid Castile soap, 1tsp olive oil, 1tsp distilled water 

•Recipe - pour all the ingredients in a container and shake well. 

•Use apple cider vinegar before final wash or simply wash with cool water. 

4) Shampoo for Greasy and oily hair

a) Lemon and aloe shampoo 

•Aloe - It is the best natural product for healthy hair and also prevent excess oil. 

•Ingredients- 2tsp lemon juice, 1tsp aloe vera gel, 1/2 cup liquid Castile soap.

•Recipe - Pour all the ingredients in container and mix well.

5) Homemade Dry shampoo 

• This means, after applying this shampoo you don't have to rinse your hair. Which make them super quick and easy to use. 

• It also make hair softer and denser as we don't have to wet and dry our hair constantly. And also helps to keep hair's natural colour intact. 

•Some Recipes for Dry shampoos are  --:

a)Dry cornmeal and salt shampoo 

• Ingredients- 1/2 cup cornmeal, 1tsp sea salt or pink Himalayan salt.

•Recipe - Put the ingredients together in a container and shake well. 

b) Baking soda and oatmeal shampoo

• oatmeal - It acts as natural skin exfoliator and also smoothen & strengthen our hair 

•Ingredients - 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup oatmeal 

•Recipe - mix the ingredients in container and apply on your hair. Then wash with cool water. 

PRECAUTION AND OTHER ADVICE

• Most of recipes discussed, lasts only for few weeks (if kept in fridge). So make in small patches.

•Its best to use 'glass bottles' as containers because glass is inert in nature, hence no chemicals can leach out from bottle to your shampoo. 

•Use the ingredients properly. Don't use the ingredients you are allergic to. 

•There is no need to use exactly same ingredients as mentioned in the recipes above. After a little bit of practice you can make shampoo according to the way you like . Making shampoo is more like cooking and feel free to experiment. You can always add the essential oils in the recipe to make it smell like the way you want. 

Below is the list of few different ingredients with their benefits. Feel free to use them. (Note - Be careful while using essential oils if you are pregnant)

1) Lavender essential oil - It has calming and fresh smell and also helps to promote restful night sleep. 

2) Tea tree oil - natural antibiotic, it leaves silky shine to hair 

3)Arrowroot powder -It provides protein to scalp, hence strengthen hair. 

4) Curry leaves - it contains protein (can be applied in the same way as neem leaves)

5)Ylang Ylang essential oil - It helps to retain natural vitamins, minerals and oils.
